The Perth Observatory’s Star Adoption program offers a unique and meaningful way to recognise a loved one or friend through the adoption of a star. Our program provides a gift certificate and a private viewing tour of the stars, making it an unforgettable experience for the recipient and their guests.
All stars available for adoption in our program are located in the Southern Hemisphere and have a magnitude between -1 and 4.9, which makes them visible to the naked eye, or between 5.0 and 7.9, visible in binoculars.
Our individual star adoption package includes a certificate that displays the star’s name, coordinates and the duration and purpose of the adoption. The recipient and three guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy a private star and night sky viewing tour within 12 months of the adoption, including the adopted star and several other celestial objects. The viewing will be scheduled when your chosen star is visible at a suitable time.
In addition to the certificate and viewing tour, our package includes a planisphere, which is a device that displays the constellations and stars visible in the sky at any given time. We will also provide star charts and coordinates, showing where the star is located in the night sky, and instructions on how to use them during the star viewing night.
Please note: Our Star Adoption program does not offer international naming rights to the stars, as there are no internationally recognized naming rights to the stars. The program is run by the Perth Observatory Volunteer Group Inc, and the income generated goes towards the Observatory’s not-for-profit, public outreach program.
