At that moment, we’ll be a whopping 152,087,738 km away from our star. 🔭 But hang on… why isn’t it freezing cold right now? 🥶 That’s because our seasons aren’t caused by how far we are from the Sun, but by the tilt of Earth’s axis. Down here in Australia, we’re in the middle of winter simply because our part of the planet is tilted away from the Sun. Earth’s orbit isn’t a perfect circle, it’s slightly oval-shaped, meaning we drift closer and further away each year. Aphelion happens every July, while perihelion (our closest point to the Sun) happens in January.
