Practical Action, Real Results
At Perth Observatory, we take a practical, common-sense approach to sustainability and community engagement. We believe in actions that make a genuine difference — not only for the environment, but also for the people who live, work, and volunteer here.
Containers for Change
We’re proud participants in Containers for Change, a program that turns everyday recycling into direct support for the Observatory’s operations and outreach.
- We have a dedicated recycling bin in our kitchen, and volunteers regularly return eligible containers, with all funds going back into the Observatory’s programs and facilities.
- Visitors and supporters can also contribute by scanning our Containers for Change QR code (found at key entry and exit points, as well as promoted through our social media). This allows anyone to donate their recycling refund directly to Perth Observatory — a simple way to make a positive impact.
This initiative not only reduces waste but also helps sustain the Observatory’s ongoing educational work.
Community Through Volunteering — Everyone Has Something to Give
At Perth Observatory, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute to their community, no matter their age, ability, or background.
Our volunteer program:
- Welcomes volunteers aged 16 and over.
- Removes unnecessary barriers to participation, particularly for those living with disabilities or neurodivergence.
- Supports a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment where volunteers can thrive.
This isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about ensuring that every role is a good match for the individual’s strengths and needs, while also supporting the Observatory’s broader goals.
A Diverse Volunteer Family
Currently, a large proportion of our 180+ volunteers live with disabilities, and over half are aged 65 or older. Many of our volunteers also contribute with the support of carers or disability support workers.
Their life experience, wisdom, and unique perspectives are a core strength of our volunteer team, fostering:
- A culture of mutual respect and shared learning.
- A welcoming space where every contribution is valued.
- Greater community understanding and inclusion.
Our Commitment: Purposeful, Practical Inclusion
We continually learn from our volunteers, refining our practices to ensure that everyone has the chance to make meaningful contributions — whether through education, astronomy, maintenance, or community outreach.
We are proud to be a place where:
- Practical sustainability meets real community benefits.
- Volunteers of all backgrounds and abilities work together towards shared goals.
- Everyone has the chance to leave a positive legacy.
