Last night was something pretty special. 🌕🌑

Our Volunteers, Roger from @astrophotographyaustralia and Matt, had a fantastic time down at Matilda Bay live-streaming the Total Lunar Eclipse for our friends at @timeanddatecom. It was wonderful to see so many people wander over to see what we were doing, take a look through the gear, and ask plenty of great questions about the eclipse and the night sky.

There’s always something magical about watching the Moon slowly slip into Earth’s shadow and turn that deep coppery red colour, even better when it becomes a bit of an impromptu public astronomy night by the river!

If you missed this one, don’t worry, you can click the link in our bio to rewatch the stream, and the sky has more planned for us. The next Total Lunar Eclipse visible from Australia will arrive on New Year’s Eve 2028, which will make for a pretty spectacular way to ring in 2029.

Before that, 2028 will be a huge year for eclipses in Australia. In July 2028, we’ll see a partial lunar eclipse, and even more exciting, a Total Solar Eclipse. The path of totality will cross Australia from the northwest to the southeast, starting just south of Kununurra, passing near Alice Springs, and continuing across the country towards Sydney.

Plenty of cosmic reasons to keep looking up.

🌕 Worm Moon… with a side of Total Lunar Eclipse! 🌑

Tonight’s Full Moon is traditionally known as the Worm Moon, named by Native American and early colonial communities in North America. As the ground begins to warm at the end of winter, earthworms start reappearing in the soil, signalling that spring is on the way. Birds return. The land softens. Life starts wriggling again.

In Australia, of course, we’re heading into autumn rather than spring. But the name still sticks, and it’s a lovely reminder that the seasons are always turning somewhere on Earth.

But this year, the Worm Moon is doing something extra special…

✨ We’re getting a Total Lunar Eclipse. ✨

That means the Moon will pass completely into Earth’s shadow and turn that deep coppery red we lovingly call a Blood Moon. It’s one of the most beautiful and easiest astronomical events to watch, no telescope required.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Perth Hills, it has begun.

The Hills Symphony Orchestra has officially launched into the evening with a rather majestic, sea-sprayed rendition of The Hebrides Overture. One can almost hear the waves crashing dramatically against the Bickley Valley… which is impressive, given we are several hours’ drive from the nearest ocean.

Felix Mendelssohn would be absolutely thrilled to know his musical depiction of a Scottish sea cave is currently echoing through the trees of the Observatory. If you close your eyes, you can picture rugged cliffs, misty horizons and possibly someone in a tartan scarf looking windswept and profound.

The orchestra is sounding magnificent. The audience is suitably enchanted. No actual seagulls have attempted a solo, which is frankly a triumph.

What a way to begin the night. 🎻🌊

On 3 March, Earth will take a bite out of the Moon and turn it a deep copper red in a spectacular Total Lunar Eclipse.

And the best part?

The International Space Station (@iss) will fly over extremely bright on Friday at 8:00 pm (Mag -3.7) and Saturday at 7:13 pm ( Mag -3.4).

You may have seen a lot of posts about the “Planet Parade” on 28 February. We love a good astronomical event, but this one isn’t going to be a spectacular all-in-one sky show as a lot of these AI slop posts are saying.

To see most of the planets, you’ll need to be out at twilight, and several of them will be sitting very low on the western horizon.

If you’d like to give it a go, head to a beach or somewhere with a clear, flat view to the west around 7:15 pm. Venus and Saturn will be very low, and Saturn in particular will suffer from heavy atmospheric distortion so it may look wobbly or blurry.

Neptune won’t be visible to the naked eye, it’s simply too faint in twilight.

Jupiter will be the standout and the easiest to spot.

If you’ve got a go-to telescope, you can wait until it gets darker and try for Uranus, which will appear as a small cyan dot. It’s sitting near the Pleiades.

We won’t be running a public event on the 28th as we’ll be hosting our sold-out Hills Symphony Orchestra concert that evening, but for those who would like to try, we wish you clear skies and good hunting.

Artist applications are now open for the inaugural @perthskysculpture Park Exhibition and $150,000 Acquisitive Awards.

To be held this Spring, the Exhibition marks the opening of Perth Sky at the Perth Observatory as a new permanent cultural destination for Western Australia.

Selected works will be exhibited for circa two years, unless sold, providing a meaningful platform for artists and helping to grow the arts ecosystem in WA.

The Acquisitive Awards are supported by the @cityofkalamunda. Award-winning sculptures will be acquired into the City’s public art collection for the local community to enjoy for generations to come.

Perth Sky Sculpture Park is located at the Perth Observatory in the Bickley Valley, Perth Hills.
