We’ve had a flood of reports tonight via social We’ve had a flood of reports tonight via social media, emails, and even phone calls, about a brilliant fireball streaking across the WA sky around 6:45 pm.

After doing some digging, it looks like the culprit wasn’t a meteor this time, but the re-entry of a Starlink satellite, specifically STARLINK-5978, which burned up spectacularly over WA.

This year has been incredible for skywatchers: we've seen three major meteors light up the night, the fiery return of NASA’s TRACE solar observatory, and now a Starlink satellite putting on its own show.

So, what’s a Starlink satellite? They’re part of SpaceX's mega-constellation, thousands of satellites working together to provide global internet coverage, especially in remote and hard-to-reach areas. When one reaches the end of its life, it naturally re-enters Earth’s atmosphere and burns up, just like we saw tonight.

A rare and unforgettable sight, and just another reminder that the night sky is full of surprises!

Alright, folks… I think Mother Nature has RSVP’d “coming” for the Total Lunar Eclipse here in Perth tonight.

Well, isn’t this just classic Perth weather? We’ve been waiting two years for a total lunar eclipse, and what happens? The Moon finally struts out to put on its once-in-a-while red carpet show… and the clouds show up like uninvited relatives at Christmas dinner. So, if you hear distant shouting in the Hills tonight, don’t worry, it’s just our Matt Woods, yelling at the weather gods to let the Moon have her moment.

You can still watch the eclipse with @timeanddatecom and @dubaiastronomy:

🌌 AURORA ALERT – PLEASE READ IN FULL! 🌌 W 🌌 AURORA ALERT – PLEASE READ IN FULL! 🌌

We’ve had a quiet run in WA when it comes to the Aurora Australis since the 1st of January with really only one chance with the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on the 1st of June, mainly because the Sun’s eruptions have been firing in every direction except ours. Typical luck, hey?

A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was launched from the Sun following an M2.79-class CME, which was released at 4:02 am AWST on August 31st. SOHO coronagraph images show a full halo – a strong sign this CME is Earth-directed.

We’re now in waiting mode for its arrival at around 7 pm AWST tonight, which could spark a G3 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm. There's no rush to get out the door just yet, but now's the time to get prepared. If the conditions line up – particularly the magnetic field’s orientation, we could be treated to auroral display total.

☁️ WEATHER (OF COURSE)

It's supposed to be clear tonight, but we do have a Waxing Gibbous Moon, with 71% of the Moon's surface illuminated so it'll make the Aurora harder to see. Stay across the latest forecasts via:

• BOM – http://bom.gov.au
• Windy.com – https://windy.com

🌠 AURORA SPOTTING IS A PATIENT PERSON’S GAME

Auroras, like comets, meteor showers, and cats, do their own thing. Patience is everything. I chased the October 2024 aurora for five nights before it finally lit up the sky. So, use this time to unwind, enjoy the stars (or clouds), and recharge the brain.

Clear skies and good hunting, fingers crossed we finally get a show! 💫

Thanks to everyone who sent us messages about the Thanks to everyone who sent us messages about the fireball in the north around 6:30 pm. We've had a number of these meteors and space junk fireballs this year. I can tell you the Autobots aren't arriving, they've paid me enough to say that 😂. By the looks of the fireball, it's definitely a meteor, and not Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Jazz, or Wheeljack

Funny enough, I was literally outside two minutes beforehand, bringing my washing in and missed it, so it was great to see it because our night cameras wouldn't have started for the night. Thanks to Michael Wilton, one of our followers, who sent us this footage.
