The Sun released an X9.0 solar flare last night!

That's the strongest flare of Solar Cycle 25. The US's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( @noaa ) has released the first generated models, and it's showing the impact of the storm (energetic X9.05) hitting us between midnight on the 5th and dawn on the 6th of October AWST. Unfortunately, This isn't great for us; cloud forecasts for WA are horrid. But don't lose hope, definitely get out there when it happens.

📍 Where is best?

For the prime viewing spot, head anywhere with a clear southern view of the horizon, away from the glaring lights of urban areas. Kings Park might not be your best bet for this celestial spectacle. Opt for locations like Mt Dale, Lake Leschenaultia, or the serene shores of Herron Point and Island Reserve. From Perth to beyond, places like Esperance, Albany, Denmark, Ferguson Valley, Gas Bay, or Cape Leeuwin offer front-row seats to nature's light shows in WA.

👀 Can I see it with my eyes?

Yes, indeed! But don't expect the vivid hues captured in photos; instead, you might catch subtle greyish beams. For the best experience, rely on long-exposure photography to truly capture its ethereal beauty.

📸 Camera settings?

Set your aperture wide, shutter speed around 10-15 seconds, and ISO starting at 3200. Adjust white balance as needed. And don't forget your tripod for steady shots!

🌟 Remember...

Be mindful of fellow photographers; avoid bright lights that can ruin their shots. Even the subtlest interference, like car headlights or interior lights, can disrupt their artistry.

Good News!!! Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) s

Tonight at 08:43 pm (AWST), we will witness the Southward Equinox, an astronomical event that signifies the onset of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the arrival of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. At this precise moment, the Sun’s declination, as observed from Earth, reaches 0. The equinoctial points, where the celestial equator intersects with the imaginary path of the Sun known as the ecliptic, define this significant occurrence. Throughout the 21st century, the September Equinox will fall on either September 22nd or 23rd, until the year 2092 when it will consistently take place on September 21st every fourth year.

The term “Equinox” originates from Latin and translates to “equal nights.” During this event, day and night are nearly equal in duration across the globe, and the Sun rises precisely due east and sets due west as seen by an observer. The Full Moon nearest to the September Equinox holds the title of the “Harvest Moon” a period when farmers utilise the extended twilight to gather their crops. In 2024, the Harvest Moon graced the sky on September 18th.

It’s worth noting the term “Equilux”, which distinguishes the true Equinox from the point when the duration of daylight matches the duration of night-time. Several factors contribute to this disparity, including the time it takes for the physical diameter of the Sun to clear the horizon, atmospheric refraction, and the observer’s precise location within their respective time zone. The Equilux occurs within a few days of either Equinox, accounting for these variations.

Did you catch Monday’s spectacular fireball?

The Global Meteor Network, which we’re a part of, calculated that this stunning event took place over the South West Cape of Western Australia. The fireball began its journey southwest of Nannup, burning up 40 kilometres above the Southern Ocean, just off the coastline near Augusta.

It was estimated to be travelling at an incredible 14 kilometres per second! Its orbit around the Sun stretched from halfway between Mars and the Asteroid Belt, to just inside Earth’s orbit.
